Program

Introduction

The creation of the Master's Program in Applied Economics in 2014 had as its focus the study of coastal and marine regions in order to contribute to the sustainable development of these regions, with a special emphasis on the socio-economic-political-environmental development of the southernmost region of RS, through the establishment of excellent scientific support for the formulation of public policies that address the coastal and marine area.

In addition to these positive aspects, the implementation of the Master's Program aims to contribute to the formation of human capital in the field of economics, with a focus on Applied Economics to Coastal and Marine Zones not only in the southernmost region of RS but also in Brazil.

The research lines of the program comprise the following topics:

(i) Economics of Coastal and Marine Zones: This research line focuses on studying the economics of pollution, natural resource economics, methods of environmental valuation, with a specific focus on the coastal and marine environment. Topics studied include the economics of climate change, public policies for the sea, use and conservation of biodiversity, economic evaluation of environmental and human impacts, exploitation of natural resources, and economic studies of productive sectors (such as oil, gas, fishing, and tourism), all with a focus on the coastal and marine environment.

(ii) Economics of Social Welfare: This line encompasses topics related to societal problems that are directly or indirectly associated with issues of economic and social efficiency. The work developed in this line involves discussions on topics such as security, poverty, labor market, health, environmental and natural resource economics, and sustainable regional development.

The Graduate Program in Applied Economics (PPGE-Mar/FURG), along with the Federal University of Rio Grande, has its area of expertise focused on the study of coastal and oceanic ecosystems.

The studies, projects, articles, and dissertations developed within the two research lines of the program, Coastal and Marine Economics and Economics of Social Welfare, directly contribute to the advancement of research related to the 17 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS of the United Nations. However, they are particularly aligned with the following goals: 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation; 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy; 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth; 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities; 13 - Climate Action; 14 - Life Below Water.
